Oliver Scharwat, M.D.

Since the expansion of the Medical Centre Bonn (date: January 1st, 2007) we can now also provide medical care and treatment for neurological diseases.

The specialist field of neurology mainly comprises diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system. The interdisciplinary concept and the close cooperation with the other specialists offer the possibility to analyse and find a multimodal way of treatment for diseases and problems. This is mostly related to incontinence ailments and oncological diseases belonging to the specialist fields of urology and gynaecology. Since many neurological diseases lead to considerable movement disorders (apraxia) and sometimes cause permanent disabilities, it is of great importance to start individual, intensive, physical and rehabilative treatment as soon as possible. This can be done in cooperation with our department of physical medicine.

Our spectrum for treatment comprises the following neurological disease patterns:

•    Cerebro-vascular diseases (apoplexia and others)
•    Inflammatory diseases of the nervous system (e.g. meningitis)
•    Headache(e.g. migraine, tension headache, trigeminal neuralgia)
•    Epilepsy (seizure)
•    Movement disorders (amongst others Morbus Parkinson, tremor)
•    Malignant diseases of the peripheral and central nervous system
•    Autoimmune diseases (amongst others multiple sclerosis)
•    Myopathies (muscle diseases)
•    Polyneuropathy
•    Other disorders of the peripheral nervous system (e.g. radiculopathias)
•    Dementia (brain dysfunctions, amongst others Morbus Alzheimer)
•    Dizziness (including Morbus Menier, vertigo)

We have all kinds of modern diagnosis methods at our disposal:

•    Extra and intracranial double and duplex sonography of vessels supplying the brain
•    EEG (electroencephalogram)
•    Determination of nerve conduction velocity
•    Electromyographic examination
•    Examination of evoked potentials
•    Liquor and laboratory diagnosis
•    Neuropsychological testing

Preventive medical checkup:

Preventive medical checkups are perfomed with specially selected diagnostic methods. It is the aim to detect risks and warning signs early and thus treat the patient prophylactically according to the individual risk profile. These “individual health services” (IGel) are not covered by the health insurance companies, so patients have to pay for them.

We optionally offer preventive examinations for the following fields:

•    Apoplexia
•    Vertigo
•    Brain dysfunctions

You can find further information concerning preventive medical checkups of other interdisciplinarily connected medical specialist fields on the corresponding internet sites.
